Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated professional to join our team as a Fisheries Specialist. As a key member of our compliance team, you will be responsible for enforcing fisheries legislation and protecting New Zealand's marine environment.

The role is varied and challenging, requiring strong problem-solving skills, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to work independently in remote areas. You will be working closely with local communities, stakeholders, and other government agencies to ensure effective enforcement and sustainable use of fisheries resources.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Enforcing fisheries legislation and regulations;

  • Conducting inspections and monitoring activities across the Fisheries sector;

  • Collating, interpreting, and monitoring fishing-related information and electronic data;

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with tangata whenua and stakeholder groups who use the fisheries resource;

  • Working under the direction of your District Manager and developing your own work plans and strategies dealing with the issues and priorities in our area;

  • Traveling away overnight at times and being available for domestic and international Fishery patrol deployments on Navy, Airforce, or other government assets;

  • Maintaining a high level of physical fitness and being able to operate in a variety of environments.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • A strong understanding of the New Zealand Fisheries framework and related legislation;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse cultures and stakeholders;

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and make informed decisions;

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high level of physical fitness and mobility;

  • A passion for the marine environment and a commitment to ensuring its sustainable use and protection;

  • Experience in enforcement, law enforcement, or a related field is highly desirable.
