About the Role

The University of Melbourne is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Technician to support the Mechatronics, Electronics, and Digital Cluster laboratories. As a key member of the team, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and operating various laboratory equipment, ensuring effective use by academic staff and contributing to research and teaching activities across diverse fields, including electronics, human-computer interaction, AI, cybersecurity, and robotics.

Your Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical expertise and support for teaching and research activities, including instructing staff and students on effective laboratory equipment usage.
  • Facilitate the purchase and installation of new equipment and software while ensuring compliance with operational, spatial, and OHS requirements.
  • Oversee maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment and software, ensuring safety compliance and conducting regular inspections and self-audits.
  • Provide technical support in specialty areas such as electronics, robotics, and software development, while preparing for practical classes and managing lab access and inductions.

Requirements

  • A relevant degree and/or trade or an equivalent combination of experience and educational training that supports teaching and research facilities in higher education and/or the industry R&D sector, particularly in Mechatronics, Electronics, and Digital Cluster.
  • Proven experience with controllers and analogue-to-digital data acquisition, alongside hands-on work in electronics, electrical, and mechatronics circuits prototyping, including printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication and diagnostic testing processes.
  • Familiarity with software and application development, as well as experience in motion tracking platforms, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and robotic systems, including the Robot Operating System.
  • Knowledge of lidar and geospatial technologies, as well as technology surveillance methodologies.
