Opportunity in Economic Policy

The Australian government's leading economic policy analysts offer a diverse range of projects for successful graduates to apply their skills.

  • Commence a full-time position with a generous salary and advance to a higher classification and salary at the completion of a 12-month program.
  • Undertake rotations in different work areas, access on-the-job learning and development opportunities, and engage in policy research and development.
  • As an Economist graduate, contribute to informing decisions on policies for the good of the Australian people, working in areas across fiscal and monetary policies, budgetary policies, and forecasting changes in the economic environment.
About the Role

Graduates who have studied Economics and Econometrics are primarily sought after. However, those with related degrees who have a major or minor in Economics are also considered.

Benefits of being an Economist graduate include exposure to real-time economic modelling and forecasting using specialist tools and approaches, reviewing and analysing data, and engaging in policy research and development.

Successful applicants will be matched with a suitable position in a participating Australian Government department or agency. You'll have the opportunity to nominate your preferred placement when you apply.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the program, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen.
  • Have or will have completed a Bachelor degree or higher by the end of 2026.
  • Have completed your qualification between January 2022 and December 2026.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance once accepted into the program.
  • Be willing to undergo any police, character, health, or other checks required.

The selection process for this program typically includes online application, testing and/or video interview, assessment centre, matching and offers.

Most graduate roles are based in Canberra. Some roles may be available in other Australian cities and major regional centres.
