As a Cloud Data Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, building and implementing cloud-based data solutions that drive business value. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop scalable and secure data pipelines, ensuring seamless data integration and high-quality data delivery. This role requires a strong focus on cloud platforms, particularly Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, and major cloud providers.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with data engineering tools, including ETL/ELT principles, data governance, data security, and compliance best practices. A solid understanding of cloud cost management (FinOps) is essential to ensure that our data solutions remain both scalable and cost-efficient.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Design & Build: Architect, develop, and maintain scalable and robust data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes for our new cloud data platform to collect, process, and store data from multiple sources.
- Drive the Migration: Play a key role in the strategic planning and hands-on execution of migrating data from on-premises sources (SQL Server and a number of source systems) to the cloud Snowflake with a Fabric front end.
- Optimise Performance: Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise data pipelines to ensure data quality, reliability, and performance.
- Collaborate & Innovate: Work closely with technology and business stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver high-quality data solutions.
- Ensure Best Practices: Implement and advocate for data engineering best practices in data modelling, data governance, and security.
- Document & Report: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for data pipelines, system architecture, and processes. Generate reports on data quality, pipeline performance, and migration status to ensure transparency and support project governance.
- Develop and deliver visualisation dashboards in accordance with best practice methodologies ensuring requirements are gathered and met and reports are tested and delivered to agreed standards and timeframes.
- Create robust processes for data quality assurance and resolve incidents assigned within agreed timeframes.
- Develop and implement data models with the Data Architect in agreed timeframes.
- Contribute towards master data management by educating end users and maintaining data integrity.
- Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting to maintain reliability and performance.
Essential Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer with a strong focus on cloud data solutions.
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake or Microsoft Fabric is essential.
- Demonstrated success in migrating data from on-premises databases to a cloud data warehouse.
- Proficiency in Power BI, SQL, and a scripting language like Python.
- Solid understanding of ETL/ELT principles and experience with data integration tools.
- Familiarity with major cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Knowledge of data governance, data security, and compliance best practices.
- Strong understanding of cloud cost management (FinOps) to ensure that our data solutions remain both scalable and cost-efficient.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Experience in the Higher Education sector.
- Experience with data orchestration tools.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines for data engineering. Certification in Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, or a major cloud provider.
