Therapeutic Specialist Job Description

This is a key role in providing clinical and therapeutic services to children, young people, families, and carers.

The Therapeutic Specialist works closely with local Case Workers and OOHC Coordinators to deliver therapeutic services, conduct assessments, develop treatment plans, and guide staff and carers in providing effective care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide therapeutic leadership and implement trauma-informed interventions based on contemporary research and practice expertise.
  • Conduct assessments, risk assessments, and develop therapeutic plans and Behaviour Support Plans for children and young people in the program.

Training and Development:

  • Provide training and group work for foster carers and staff, focusing on trauma and its impact.
  • Help develop therapeutic skills within the team through regular reflective practice sessions.

Support and Guidance:

  • Intensive support and guidance is provided to foster carers, including participation in assessments and annual reviews.
  • Collaboration occurs with the care team to support children and young people in maintaining positive connections within the community.

Reporting and Quality Assurance:

  • Regular reporting to the OOHC Coordinator Southern NSW takes place.
  • Participation in quality assurance activities, service development, and the development of frameworks for trauma-informed service delivery.

Selection Criteria:

  • A solid understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people, and families.
  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work or a related discipline (essential) and current registration with the relevant peak body or association.
  • Post Graduate training in relevant child, adolescent and family clinical practice, family therapy and systemic thinking (strongly preferred).
