About the Role

The Australian Museum is seeking a skilled researcher to join its First Nations Division as a Repatriation Researcher. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Museum's mission to promote reconciliation, self-determination, and best practice in cultural heritage.

The successful candidate will conduct provenance research to provide assurance to communities that Ancestral Remains and Secret/Sacred Objects are accurately returned to their respective source communities. This will involve engaging with the Museum's Archives and conducting independent research, as well as providing support for other areas of the Repatriation Program.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience working with First Nations and/or Pasifika communities, understanding the complexities of this interaction within an institutional setting. They will also have experience working with archival material, databases, and collection management systems.

The role is part-time, with two positions available: one for 2 days per week and the other for 3 days per week. The successful candidates will be assigned to one of these arrangements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct provenance research to provide assurance to communities that Ancestral Remains and Secret/Sacred Objects are accurately returned to their respective source communities.
  • Engage with the Museum's Archives and conduct independent research.
  • Provide support for other areas of the Repatriation Program.
  • Work with First Nations and/or Pasifika communities to address past injustices in museum collecting practices.

Requirements:

  • Tertiary level qualifications, or demonstrable equivalent professional experience, in a relevant discipline.
  • Postgraduate level qualifications, or currently enrolled in a postgraduate research program.
  • Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

What We Offer:

  • A competitive annual salary $93,295 - $102,942, pro-rated.
  • Employer's contribution to superannuation (currently 11.5%).
  • Annual leave loading.
