About the Program

Maintaining strong social connections is vital for overall health, particularly in later life. The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) and Volunteer Visitors program aim to assist older Australians residing in aged care facilities or their own homes who may be experiencing loneliness or social isolation. Volunteers are paired with older individuals, either individually or in small groups, to foster friendship and companionship, enhancing their wellbeing and social ties.

As a visiting volunteer, you will conduct regular social visits to an older individual in your community at a mutually agreed time. These visits may involve sharing pleasant conversations over tea or engaging in shared interests and activities such as playing cards or board games.

Role Overview

This position requires strong conversational abilities and the capacity to connect with a diverse range of older individuals, including those with varying life experiences, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.

All volunteers must undergo a National Criminal Check. The Australian Red Cross will provide training, ongoing support, and access to additional opportunities within a global humanitarian network.

Your Impact

As a visiting volunteer, you will significantly enhance the life of an older person facing loneliness by providing companionship and social interaction. You will have the chance to learn from their unique experiences and insights, while they will benefit from your company. In addition to the fulfillment of giving back, you will also gain a friend.

You will be part of the Australian Red Cross Aged & Community Care team, dedicated to supporting older and vulnerable individuals across Australia through various volunteer-based initiatives.

Application Process

For this role, you will be required to complete a National Police Check, organized through the Australian Red Cross.

Additional Information

For further details about this opportunity, please refer to the Australian Red Cross resources. Thank you for considering a volunteering role with the Australian Red Cross. We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment, prioritizing wellbeing. We celebrate diversity and welcome individuals from all backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as those with varied life experiences, abilities, genders, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations.
