Environment Conservation Specialist

This position plays a crucial role in developing and implementing programs and projects that support the achievement of natural resource management outcomes in the region.

About North West Queensland

The region encompasses the catchments of several major rivers, including the Flinders-Cloncurry, Leichhardt, Gregory-Nicholson Rivers, Settlement Creek, Morning Inlet, and the Wellesley Islands.

The unique geography and climate support a wide variety of flora and fauna, making it an ideal location for conservation efforts.

Purpose of Position

The specialist will develop and implement initiatives to protect and conserve the environment, as well as promote sustainable land use practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish and manage natural resource management projects, ensuring effective budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders, including landholders, government agencies, community groups, and traditional owners.
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities to support environmental projects and initiatives.
  • Provide technical expertise and advice on environmental issues and emerging trends, informing strategic decision-making at the regional level.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve organisational goals and objectives, contributing to the success of the team.

Selection Criteria

  • A tertiary qualification in Agricultural or Environmental Science, or related disciplines, is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in industry extension principles and practices, particularly in engaging with agricultural and land management sectors.
  • High-level organisational skills, with ability to coordinate multiple projects and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with capacity to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, meet deadlines, and establish priorities.
  • Experience in project development, documentation, and implementation is highly desirable.

Additional Factors

This position requires flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to take initiative and work unsupervised when necessary. A sound understanding of natural resource management principles and practices, supplemented by specific professional competencies relevant to the region, is also essential.

Travel throughout the region will be required, including significant distances on unsealed roads in remote areas. Experience with four-wheel drive operation would be advantageous.
