Deputy Journalism Leader

As a Deputy Editor, you will play a key role in shaping the masthead's editorial strategy and leading a high-performing team to deliver original reporting and analysis.

You will work closely with the Editor to lead daily and long-term editorial planning, setting coverage priorities and guiding impactful journalism.

• Commission, edit, and publish high-quality content across print and digital platforms, ensuring clear, authoritative reporting and alignment with the masthead's editorial standards.
• Manage rosters, workflow coordination, leave management, and print planning.
• Mentor and support reporters, encouraging exclusive reporting, strong sourcing, analytical depth, and enterprise journalism that drives engagement and reader loyalty.
• Drive digital strategy and collaboration, including SEO and social media planning, story placement, and participation in masthead conferences and briefings, with regular weekend and flexible hours as required.

• At least five years' journalism experience, including demonstrated ability to edit and lead complex coverage.
• Strong news judgement, with a track record of identifying original, high-impact stories.
• Experience working with reporters to develop ideas, strengthen reporting, and refine storytelling.
• First-rate editing skills with a sharp eye for accuracy, clarity, fairness, and tone.
• A digital-first mindset and familiarity with digital publishing tools and techniques.
• Excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a calm approach under deadline pressure.
• A willingness to accept feedback and respond accordingly.
• A collaborative, supportive attitude and strong communication skills.
• Knowledge of audience analytics, SEO, and newsletter strategy would be an advantage.
