The position of Defence and National Security Fellow offers an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in security and resilience. The successful candidate will join a team of leading experts in the field, advancing knowledge nationally.

  • Based at City campus but may work at other RMIT campuses.
  • Contribute to high-impact research within the Security & Resilience Hub (S&RHub) and the Sir Lawrence Wackett Defence and Aerospace Centre (SLWDAC).

About the Position

The Fellow will lead independent and collaborative research projects, developing and executing research aligned with S&RHub and SLWDAC strategic focus areas. Strong research networks within RMIT and with national and local partners will be built and nurtured.

  • Plan, develop, and submit competitive funding proposals to secure defence and national security research funding.
  • Contribute to educational programs tailored to academic and industry needs.

Research Areas and Capabilities:

The following capabilities are sought:

  • Digital Engineering, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Human Machine-Teaming
  • Aerostructures and Flight Science
  • Advanced Composite and Alloy Additive Manufacturing
  • Propulsion Systems
  • RF/Electronics and Communications
  • Advanced Sensor Technologies, Sensor Networks, and System Tracking

Other topic areas will be considered on request.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong track record of quality research outputs contributing to defence and national security areas.
  • Strong track record in securing and managing research funding.
  • Ability to build effective networks and generate alternative funding projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver high-quality courses.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills for interacting with staff, industry, and higher degree by research candidates.

Qualifications:

Mandatory: PhD or equivalent in relevant field.

Preferred: Australian citizenship, eligibility for or possession of Security Clearances.

Appointment subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.
