The role of a Utilities Team Leader is paramount in the effective management and execution of site operations for utilities and groundworks projects. This position demands high standards of safety, quality, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities
  • The incumbent must report operational or design issues to the Contracts Manager promptly.
  • On-site risk assessments are conducted, and safety provisions are implemented accordingly.
  • The Utilities Team Leader oversees the setup of site safety measures including signage, guarding, shoring, PPE, etc.
  • Supervision of tool and equipment use and maintenance falls under their remit.
  • Safe working practices near buried utilities and in varying weather conditions are ensured by the team leader.
  • Site diaries and record-keeping must be maintained accurately.
  • Labour, plant, and materials must be organised efficiently to enhance operational efficiency.
  • The Utilities Team Leader plans works and allocates manpower effectively.
  • Regular liaison with Contracts Manager and other project teams is crucial.
  • Maintenance of materials ordering and site variation collection is also part of this role.
  • Delivering toolbox talks and attending team briefings are essential duties.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
  • Prioritising pedestrian safety, especially considering the needs of disabled individuals, is vital.
  • All activities must adhere to safety protocols and environmental best practices.
  • A leadership-by-example approach in safe working procedures supports a safety-first culture on-site.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Holding a CSCS Card is mandatory.
  • Proven experience in utilities and groundworks is required.
  • A strong background in water or cabling works is beneficial.
  • Experience leading site teams as a foreman or ganger is necessary.
  • A solid understanding of health and safety procedures is expected.
  • Ability to plan and manage work efficiently is a key requirement.
