About The Role

This position provides high-quality speech and language pathology services to meet the unique communication needs of young people in youth detention, ensuring continuity of care following their release into the community.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist working within a youth detention centre, you will deliver individual, universal, and systemic consultation, assessment, and intervention services, providing specialist advice on the care and support of young people with complex communication needs or disability-specific support requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Cultural Capability: Demonstrate cultural awareness and capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  2. Clinical Assessments: Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments of young people's communication skills contributing to multi-disciplinary clinical evaluations and neurodevelopmental assessments. Develop associated reports informing referrals and interventions in both detention and community-based settings.
  3. Accessible Materials: Lead and contribute to modifying written information and other communication materials using Easy English/plain language principles and developing visual supports improving the accessibility of information for young people with complex communication needs.
  4. Interventions and Training: Implement high-quality interventions with young people assisting with understanding, expressive language, literacy, social skills, and daily functioning demonstrating knowledge of complex trauma, mental health, and disabilities' impacts on communication skills. Design and deliver speech-language pathology training programs relating to the management of young people with communication support needs.
