The Senior Technical Officer will play a pivotal role in the School of Engineering at Deakin University's Burwood campus. This position will focus on areas such as soil and water testing, establishment of new facilities, and ensuring safe operation of spaces. As the Senior Technical Officer, you will utilize your expertise in environmental engineering/science, chemistry, practical civil engineering experience, and health and safety knowledge to support the development and delivery of practical teaching, research, and administrative duties in the areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Your Key Responsibilities- Research, propose, coordinate, and implement technical solutions to support the strategic initiatives and operations of the School of Engineering.
- Provide hands-on support in a lab environment.
- Proactively engage with teaching activities, in collaboration with academic staff, by providing specialist knowledge and training on how to work on equipment and engineering software predominantly relevant to the civil and environmental engineering discipline.
- Ensure that laboratory equipment is maintained and operated to a safe and high standard and carry out minor repairs to equipment and coordinate with stakeholders within Deakin or outside service engineers as necessary.
- Strive for excellence and consult regularly with clients to clarify who requires the information, the purpose for which it is required, criteria for success, and where and when advice and recommendation is required.
- Support various laboratory projects for teaching and research as required, including outreach, industry engagement, and inter-school activities.
- Acquire and ensure appropriate stocks of consumables are maintained, equipment is kept in good working order, and calibration and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment.
- A Degree with subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical fields such as chemistry, water quality testing, and environmental science/engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Ability to work with and train research staff and students as well as provide guidance towards project safety.
