Lead Oceanographer

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions seeks an experienced Lead Oceanographer to contribute to the sustainable management of South Australia's seafood and marine-based industries, effective management of marine environmental assets, and enhanced resilience of regional communities through science-led innovation and policy advice.

This role involves leading strategic research initiatives such as the Southern Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (SAIMOS) and the Southern Australian Regional Ocean Model (SAROM).

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver agency priorities by informing sustainable industry management, effective asset management, and community resilience through science-driven innovation and policy guidance.
  • Lead or support research projects on SAIMOS and SAROM.
  • Collaborate with researchers and stakeholders to develop and implement projects.
  • Maintain relationships with industry partners and stakeholders to advance primary industries' interests.

Requirements

  • PhD in physical, biological, or biogeochemical oceanography or a related discipline with a focus on oceanographic modelling; or equivalent experience and education/training.
  • Experience with ROMS and/or similar ocean circulation or biogeochemical modelling frameworks.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming and data analysis using tools like MATLAB, Python, or R.
  • Ability to work at sea, including equipment deployment and retrieval.
  • Proven track record of scientific publication and effective communication of complex findings to diverse audiences.
