Data Engineering Team Lead Position

DroneShield is a global leader in drone technology, offering cutting-edge solutions for the military, government agencies, airports, critical infrastructure, law enforcement, and other industries. We are seeking an experienced Data Engineering Team Lead to spearhead our data engineering efforts, driving innovation and growth within the organisation.

About Us:

We have an approximate market capitalisation of $1bn and have undergone rapid growth in recent years, driven by increasing demand for drone-based solutions. Our Sydney headquarters is a state-of-the-art facility with over 4,000sqm of space, housing approximately 200 staff, with plans to expand to 300 by 2026. We also have overseas presence in the US, Denmark, Germany, and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.

About the Role:

This is a key leadership position that demands strategic oversight and hands-on expertise in creating scalable, efficient, and secure data systems. You will lead a team of talented data engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and growth while ensuring smooth, high-performance data operations. Your efforts will be essential to the success and continued growth of the business as we navigate the evolving landscape of drone technology and AI-driven solutions.

  • Main Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain robust data processing systems, focusing on embedded sensors and large-scale raw data sources.
  • Drive innovation in automating manual processes, improving data pipelines, and redesigning infrastructure for scalability and efficiency.
  • Deploy secure, scalable, and self-hosted data infrastructure aligned with business needs and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and deliver solutions supporting key business objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, promoting continuous learning and development.
  • Develop tools and systems for monitoring, analysing, and optimising data infrastructure performance.
  • Lead efforts in deploying machine learning models in production environments, ensuring high reliability and efficiency.

Requirements:

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 2+ years of leadership or team management experience.
  • Proven experience working with Big Data, particularly with raw or sensor data.
  • Expertise in designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and workflow management tools.
  • Extensive experience with both relational (SQL) and NoSQL databases.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience in GoLang or C/C++ being a strong advantage.
  • Experience with data pipeline orchestration, automation, and optimising infrastructure for performance.
  • Knowledge of deploying machine learning models and working with machine learning pipelines (MLOps).
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with demonstrated success in mentoring and guiding junior engineers.
