About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our Geotechnical Engineering Team in Perth. As a key member of our team, you will lead a group of geotechnical professionals responsible for ensuring the geotechnical assurance across all of our Pilbara Mining Operations. Your expertise and influence will have a significant impact on the technical development and direction of the site-based geotechnical community.

Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and work in a way that prioritizes the health, safety, and wellbeing of employees.
  • Develop effective relationships with operational and technical leadership to promote proactive implementation of our slope risk management standard.
  • Ensure your team has the necessary resources and training to succeed in their roles.
  • Mentor and coach direct team members, as well as identify coaching needs within the broader geotechnical community.
  • Facilitate interaction between the Life of Mine team and other stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes for Rio Tinto.
  • Provide slope stability assurance guidance, geotechnical processes, and review recommendations to operational sites and stakeholders.
  • Act as Qualified Individual for selected Pilbara mines under Rio Tinto's D3 standard for managing pit slopes, stockpiles, spoil, waste dumps, and natural slopes.

Requirements and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • A tertiary degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field, coupled with extensive experience in the resources industry.
  • Technical and operational knowledge of surface mine design, operating practices, and the impact on value chain outcomes.
  • Competency in Risk Management and Risk Assessment.
  • Understanding of geotechnical requirements aligned with the risk profile as projects transition from early stage exploration to OOM, PFS, and FS.
  • Knowledge of specialized geotechnical software applications and experience working with 3D mine planning software.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with senior technical professionals and leaders to achieve outcomes through sharing expertise, skills, and technical capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a C-class driver's license, and a shared vision for an injury-free workplace where safety, teamwork, respect, integrity, and excellence are valued.
