Legal Director Position

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Legal Director to join our Corporate Operations Branch in Canberra.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the legal function for the department, providing expertise, advice, and direction in all legal matters to ensure policies, procedures, and processes are in line with legislation and best practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the legal function, providing strategic guidance and support to ensure compliance with legislation and best practice.
  • Prioritize the implementation of recommendations from internal and external reviews, ensuring effective change management and process improvement.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with employees at all levels, fostering a culture of collaboration and open communication.
  • Focus on education and training, promoting a safe and inclusive workplace through targeted initiatives and programs.
  • Provide timely and professional responses to legal and conduct issues, ensuring prompt resolution and minimizing risk.
  • Lead and develop a team of legal and HR professionals, aligning their skills and expertise with the department's strategic priorities.
  • Commission, oversee, and review external legal advice to ensure it meets the department's needs and is consistent with its strategic direction.
  • Promote and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, service providers, and key strategic alliances.
  • Contribute to and help shape the department's strategic direction, representing the branch effectively within the department.
  • Oversee and prepare high-quality written communication, including business cases, Senate Estimate submissions, section briefs, and corporate documentation.
  • Provide expert advice and direction to senior management on legal matters, ensuring informed decision-making and effective governance.

Requirements

  • Be admitted or eligible to be admitted as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Australia or a Supreme Court of a State or Territory.
  • Hold or be eligible to obtain a restricted government practicing certificate in the ACT.

You will be an excellent communicator, able to build strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels. Your ability to provide strategic guidance and support will be essential in driving the department's legal function forward.
