About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Safety Advisor to join our team at the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). As a key member of our Safety Operations team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of our researchers and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Emergency Control role functions at DSTG sites in NSW, ACT, TAS, and VIC, by:
    • Coordinating site-wide responses to emergencies through emergency preparedness.
    • Facilitating internal emergency exercising requirements and tracking lessons learned for continual improvement.
    • Reporting emergency preparedness deficiencies to key stakeholders.
    • Working effectively with base management teams who have overall responsibility for emergency planning across Defence Bases.
  • Deliver professional and complex safety advice and assistance to S&T stakeholders and management across a broad range of hazard and risks.
  • Contribute proactively to the implementation and continuous improvement of the DSTG Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Lead and participate in a range of safety investigations, including in the delivery of lessons learned.
  • Lead and contribute to the evaluation of activities and processes for compliance with work health and safety legislation, policies, and procedures relevant to Defence.
  • Communicate proactively with senior management and researchers by:
    • Highlighting safety issues for their attention.
    • Providing professional and timely safety guidance and assistance.
    • Proactively sharing your knowledge and influencing for positive safety outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to less experienced safety advisors as part of their career development.
  • Proactively reach out to safety specialists (hazard leads) ensuring they have the opportunity to provide hazard-specific advice and guidance to researchers as required.
  • Demonstrate a commitment and good understanding of the requirements of relevant legislative frameworks, and codes of practice as well as government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
  • Lead safety projects on behalf of DSTG.

  • Previous experience implementing emergency management processes for large complex organizations.
  • Previous experience as a member of a Work Health and Safety team in a research or novel high-risk environment, or government agency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity, listen, understand, and adapt your communication style to the audience.
  • Knowledge and previous experience in the implementation of a Safety Management System.
  • Sound judgement, intelligence, and common sense.
  • Ability to manage tasks and achieve results.
  • Strong stakeholder management and engagement skills, including the ability to nurture internal and external relationships.
  • Negotiate confidently and commit to action.
  • Behave calmly under the stress of an emergency.
  • Completion of or working towards a formal WHS qualification with the minimum standard being a Certificate IV in WHS.
