Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Biosecurity Specialist to join our team at the University of Tasmania Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). As a key member of our committee, you will play a critical role in ensuring all practices involving gene technology, biosecurity-regulated materials, and biologically-hazardous materials are conducted in accordance with legislation, Australian Standards, codes of practice, licensing requirements, and guidelines published under Section 98 of the Gene Technology Act 2000.

About the Role
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards related to biosecurity and gene technology.
  • Exercise independent judgement in reviewing proposals and applications submitted for review.
  • Provide advice and oversight on policies and procedures related to biosecurity and gene technology.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in biosecurity, gene technology, or a related field. They will be required to attend committee meetings and participate in decision-making processes.

The IBC meets four times a year to consider applications and review proposals. Committee members are required to prepare for, attend, and participate in meetings either in person or via videoconference.

Requirements
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in a related field, such as biosecurity, gene technology, or research governance.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and standards related to biosecurity and gene technology.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
