Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and executing a strategy to improve search and recommendation quality across various platforms.
  • Owning the architecture of scalable, low-latency systems that power features such as template discovery, photo recommendations, graphics, videos, and user designs.
  • Representing Discovery Understanding Engineering in collaborations with product managers, designers, and other teams.
  • Translating product goals into measurable backend solutions, running experiments, and refining features based on data-driven insights.
  • Guiding and mentoring other engineers to ensure high standards in software development and experimentation practices.
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting search performance issues to ensure reliable and performant services.

To excel in this role, you should have:

  • Deep experience building and scaling backend systems with a focus on search and recommendations or similar domains requiring experiment-driven iteration.
  • A proven track record of delivering measurable improvements to discovery systems.
  • Proficiency in Java at a staff level, with a strong foundation in data structures and system design.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy owning problems from idea to execution.
  • Experience leading large-scale projects or initiatives and guiding other engineers.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and containerized services (e.g., AWS, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Curiosity, communication skills, and a passion for empowering users through world-class product experiences.
