Leadership Opportunity in Legal Operations

The role of Deputy Principal Legal Officer presents an exceptional chance to assume a leadership position and contribute significantly to shaping access to justice in the Big Rivers Region.

About the Position

This newly created leadership position enables you to work closely with a senior Principal Legal Officer (PLO) to develop your leadership capabilities and career development plan. As the Deputy PLO, you will support the PLO in managing day-to-day legal operations, providing guidance and mentorship to junior solicitors, and representing the organization in both legal and community settings.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering high-quality legal advice, casework, and representation in complex matters
  • Providing trauma-informed support in areas such as DFSV, child protection, and family law
  • Supervising and mentoring a team of solicitors, including onboarding, performance reviews, and professional development
  • Acting as the Principal Legal Officer during periods of absence
  • Leading legal outreach services within Katherine and across remote communities
  • Designing and delivering community legal education workshops and resources
  • Strengthening relationships with legal stakeholders, government agencies, and community groups
  • Contributing to internal strategy, compliance, risk, and funding reporting processes
  • Regular travel for outreach activities, including overnight stays where necessary

To succeed in this role, you will need to be an experienced lawyer with a minimum of 4 years post-admission experience in a relevant practice area. You should have expertise working within fields such as DFSV, family law, or child protection, and familiarity with NT legislation or the ability to upskill.

As a valued member of our team, you will receive a SCHADS Level 7 salary ($120,000 – $130,000, commensurate with skills and experience), plus relocation assistance, service vehicle, travel allowance, professional development budget, NFP salary packaging, and additional remote area benefits.
