About the Role

As a member of the New Zealand Defence Force, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging environment as a Hydrographic Systems Operator. This role involves assisting in the creation of accurate seabed and coastline charts for navigational and military purposes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring of bridge survey computer equipment
  • Recording data observed by the charge surveyor
  • Recording tidal observations
  • Driving 4WD vehicles
  • Preparing survey equipment for deployment
  • Cleaning and maintenance of survey instruments
  • Assisting in the set up and operation of shore surveying stations
  • Maintaining survey records

Working at Sea

As a Hydrographic Systems Operator, you will spend a significant amount of time at sea, working on the Bridge of the ship as Helmsman or Online System Operator. You will be required to work in this capacity for at least 2 x 4 hour shifts in every 24-hour period, as well as completing hydrographic and other work duties as required.

Career Progression and Training

As you progress in your career, you will have the opportunity to gain internationally recognised qualifications in Hydrographic Surveying and the operation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. You will also work towards gaining qualifications in Geographic Information Systems and Mine Counter Measures.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this role, you must be a minimum of 17 years of age, be free of any criminal convictions, and meet the minimum entry fitness standards. You must also be medically fit for service and meet the colour perception requirements.
