Job Summary

Under the direction of a licensed professional engineer, the Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer will perform a variety of duties depending on assignment. This position is part of the New York State Department of Transportation's (NYSDOT) Engineer Traineeship Program, which leads to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare 3D plans for highway and bridge projects using computer-aided design (CADD) software.
  • Assist with bridge inspections, structural evaluations, and load ratings.
  • Prepare project reports, including scoping reports, design reports, and drainage reports.
  • Develop notes and specifications for specialty work.
Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the Engineer Trainee (Civil/Transportation) position, which include a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time engineering experience.

Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
