The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead and deliver the day-to-day operational aspects of the agency.

Job Description

This is a critical role that requires a leader who can navigate complex regulatory landscapes, shape the AER into a recognised, high-performing regulator, and commit to transparently working with all stakeholders invested in the affordable and reliable supply of energy.

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction, supporting the development and execution of the AER's Strategic Plan (2026–2030) and Corporate Plan.
  • Develop and manage the AER's budget, ensuring activities are conducted within approved parameters and aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Lead and empower the senior leadership team, assigning responsibilities clearly, supervising performance, and fostering a high-performing, values-driven culture.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Executive-level management experience and a proven track record of leadership within a dynamic, complex, and multifaceted public or private sector environment.
  • Understanding of the operations of governments and regulators.
  • Knowledge of Australian electricity and gas markets, and the role, purpose, and objectives of the AER.
