Community Corrections Advocate

The position of Official Visitor is a community-based appointment that plays a vital role in promoting the welfare and rights of inmates in correctional facilities throughout New South Wales.
As an Official Visitor, you will be responsible for conducting regular visits to custodial centres, meeting with inmates, and gathering information about their treatment and living conditions.
You will also be required to submit reports to the Inspector Custodial Services, highlighting any concerns or issues you have identified during your visits.
The ideal candidate for this role will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and think critically.
About The RoleThis is an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others and contribute to the development of more humane and rehabilitative approaches to corrections.
Successful applicants will be appointed to one custodial centre for up to four years and will be expected to conduct regular visits, monitor conditions and treatment, and provide feedback to the Inspector Custodial Services.
Applicants are invited from people with diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, women, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct regular visits to custodial centres, meeting with inmates and gathering information about their treatment and living conditions.
- Submit reports to the Inspector Custodial Services, highlighting any concerns or issues you have identified during your visits.
- Work collaboratively with other stakeholders, including correctional staff and community groups.
- Develop and maintain relationships with inmates, staff, and other stakeholders.

This role is based in various locations across New South Wales and may require frequent travel. You will be required to work in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities.
