About UsOur team is responsible for safeguarding Australia's plant health status to achieve, maintain and expand overseas markets, while protecting the economy and environment.We work together to provide scientific analysis and technical advice, facilitate the safe importation of plants and plant products, improve systems, market access, capacity building, and stakeholder engagement.Our mission is to deliver effective surveillance activities that prevent the introduction and spread of pests and diseases in Australia.The Science and Surveillance Group is comprised of four branches that work together to achieve our goals. Our division includes teams responsible for regulatory advice and training, technical input to biosecurity policy, regulation activity in the Torres Strait, and diverse surveillance and diagnostic services around Australia.One of the key components of our group is the Surveillance Section. This section delivers diagnostic or surveillance activities within the Operational Science & Surveillance (OSS) component of the Science & Surveillance Group. The section is comprised of three teams: National Border Surveillance, Vector Monitoring Program (VMP), and Hitchhiker Surveillance Program.As a Vector Surveillance Officer, you will be working under general direction of the Regional Vector Coordinator. Your duties will include:
  1. Maintaining regular communication with the RVC and seeking advice to deliver vector monitoring tasks to the required standard.
  2. Cooperating with external stakeholders associated with the Vector Monitoring Program, including port operators, other government agencies, and treatment providers.
  3. Conducting routine vector and, if required, plant-pest monitoring activities, including placement, installation, maintenance, and servicing of all trap types operated by us.
  4. Gaining knowledge of mosquito biology to guide effective delivery of vector monitoring activities, including optimum methods for sampling, placing traps, and identifying breeding sites.
  5. Conducting regular surveillance activities at first points of entry, high-risk sites, and other importer premises, including formal ground surveys.
  6. Identifying, describing, and mapping known or potential mosquito breeding sites, assessing biosecurity risk pathways, and planning field surveillance for other plant pests.
  7. Using appropriate sampling methods to determine mosquito species and their relative abundances, assessing receptiveness of each location, and initiating risk-mitigation actions through liaison with our staff and stakeholders.
  8. Entering and providing data regularly to the RVC, contributing to accurate collection and recording of surveillance data, preparing written reports documenting surveillance activities and outcomes, and managing specimens collected during surveillance.
