Counsellor - Rural Mental Health Support

Deliver mental health support and outreach counselling to rural communities affected by drought. Provide crisis support, engage with community groups, and facilitate group sessions on stress management and resilience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Delivering brief, trauma-informed counselling interventions to individuals and families experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges related to drought.
  • Providing crisis support to individuals in acute distress, including those at risk of self-harm or suicide, and facilitating referrals to emergency services when necessary.
  • Engaging with and maintaining trust-based relationships with farmers, local leaders, and community groups, and collaborating with local stakeholders to understand community needs and priorities.
  • Facilitating group sessions focused on stress management, resilience, and peer support tailored to rural community needs.
  • Collaborating with local service providers to coordinate holistic care and strengthen referral pathways.
Requirements:
  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Peer Work, Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or other health-related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering mental health support in rural or agricultural settings.
  • Strong knowledge of trauma-informed practices, mental health recovery, and care coordination.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Community Services sector and ability to build strong relationships with service providers, clinical teams, and key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently across a regional area (unrestricted driver's licence and own vehicle required).
