Director, Intergovernmental Relations Job Description

This role involves leading a professional team to provide analysis and advice to Government on Commonwealth-State funding and policy matters. This includes technical advice on the distribution of GST between states, negotiation of grants funding from the Commonwealth Government, and financial principles for engagement between Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.

  • High level negotiation, influencing and communication skills (written and verbal) with a proven ability to engage strategically with senior stakeholders both inside and outside of government;
  • Demonstrated leadership, people management and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience leading in a specialised and complex field, with an ability to distil key issues and quickly respond to emerging priorities;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of economic, fiscal and strategic issues affecting Victoria as well as an appreciation of the machinery of government.
About The Role

As Director, Intergovernmental Relations, you will be responsible for leading a highly professional team to provide analysis and advice to Government on a range of Commonwealth-State funding and policy matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leading a high performing team to provide expert analysis and advice to Government on Commonwealth-State funding and policy matters;
  • Negotiating grants funding from the Commonwealth Government and providing financial advice on intergovernmental relations;
  • Developing and implementing strategies to improve financial outcomes for Victoria through effective engagement with Commonwealth agencies;
  • Collaborating with other parts of DTF and Victorian Government agencies to deliver effective policies and programs.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Apostgraduate degree in economics, commerce, finance, public policy or a related discipline;
  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role with a track record of delivering results in a complex policy environment;
  • Exceptional negotiation, influencing and communication skills with a proven ability to engage strategically with senior stakeholders;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop and implement effective solutions.
