Job Description

The Deputy Director of Nursing Specialist Services provides leadership for the overall coordination and management of the Directorate to meet hospital objectives.

This role involves providing professional and operational leadership in all facets of nursing and midwifery service and practice, as well as coordinating and supporting quality improvement and risk management processes.

Your Role
  • You will have oversight of various teams including Quality & Risk, Hospice, Emergency Department, ICU/CCU, Maternity Services, Outpatient Services, Specialist Nurses, Cancer Centre, and Oncology Inpatient Ward.
Key Responsibilities
  1. To contribute to and promote the development of hospital goals, objectives, policies, and standards.
  2. Provide clinical leadership to establish and maintain the highest standards of nursing practice in a patient-focused environment.
  3. Develop, implement, and evaluate quality programs and provide leadership and expertise to ensure nursing care is monitored against best practice standards.
  4. Oversee and assist in preparing annual budgets for the nursing directorate and ensuring financial and productivity targets are met.
  5. Investigate any variance in financial performance against budget and develop corrective strategies.
  6. Provide leadership and direction to caregivers, building a culture of professionalism, accountability, and quality service.
  7. In consultation with departmental managers, ensure implementation, review, and evaluation of nursing division, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures.
  8. Promote continuing professional development of nursing staff and others within the directorate.
  9. Actively participate in relevant clinical and non-clinical committees within and externally to the hospital.
  10. Monitor compliance with clinical practice standards and initiate corrective action as required.
  11. Support managers in delivering cost-effective nursing and clinical care.
  12. Maintain a spirit of trust and cooperative teamwork essential to effective delivery of nursing services.
  13. Provide leadership and direction in implementing and reviewing quality and clinical risk management programs.
  14. Promote and facilitate strong working relationships between the nursing division and accredited visiting medical practitioners.
  15. Responsible for the performance development and review of caregivers within the directorate.
  16. Ensure compliance with legal, professional, and policy requirements governing healthcare and the role of nursing in service delivery.
Required Skills and Qualifications

This role requires:

  • Strong leadership skills in developing and implementing risk management systems and processes.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with nursing teams, medical practitioners, and other key stakeholders.
  • High-level conceptual and analytical skills.
  • Advanced oral and written communication ability.
  • Senior management experience and leadership in an acute hospital facility.
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse with postgraduate qualifications in Nursing, Management, or relevant discipline.
