The Monash University PhD Opportunity in Energy Studies is a prestigious scholarship program designed to develop the next generation of energy leaders. In partnership with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), this program aims to create a cohort of energy professionals with advanced multidisciplinary knowledge across engineering, IT, and business and economics.

About the Scholarship

The Zema Energy Studies Scholarship has been established to honour the memory of AEMO's founding Chief Executive Officer, energy reform leader, and Monash alumnus Matt Zema. This scholarship provides a $50,000 per annum stipend plus the opportunity for a paid internship with AEMO, and will support the successful applicant for the approved duration of their PhD candidature, to a maximum of three-and-a-half years.

Research Areas

Candidates can apply to pursue one of the following research areas:

  • Enhancing Small-Signal Stability in Inverter-Dominated Grids through Grid-Forming Inverters
  • Strengthening Grid Resilience: Large-Signal Stability with Grid-Forming Inverters in Inverter-Dominated Networks
  • Role of Storage in the Energy Market
  • Role of EVs in the Grid
Eligibility and Application

Candidates interested in pursuing a PhD in Energy Studies are encouraged to apply. The application process involves submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) or To Apply, after which you will be invited to make a full submission. The deadline for submitting full applications is 31 October 2024.
