Job Description: EL1 - Lawyer, Legal Services (Public Law) Branch

This is an exciting opportunity to advance your career or gain experience in the Australian Public Service. As a lawyer in our Public Law Team, you will support the design and development of complex primary and secondary legislation, working on diverse subject matters such as online safety, civil aviation, telecommunications, vehicle safety and efficiency, arts and cultural affairs, and non-self-governing territories.

You will have exposure to a broad range of public law matters, including advising on regulatory law, administrative decision-making, statutory interpretation, policies, and programs, as well as managing civil litigation. Your key responsibilities will include providing legal advice and support on complex legislation design and development, preparing legal instruments for portfolio Ministers, and advising on various complex legal issues.

In this role, you will work under broad direction, operating within a dynamic and supportive team environment. You will also have opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills, participating in legal reviews of portfolio legislation and contributing to Divisional and Team priorities.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A tertiary degree in Law from an Australian institution (or comparable overseas qualification)
  • Admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court or of the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory (or meet the necessary requirements to be admitted)
  • Holding or being eligible to obtain a Practising Certificate
  • At least 3-5 years of prior experience working as a lawyer (either in-house or externally)
  • Advanced technical legal skills and experience in providing advice and supporting legislation projects
  • The capacity to develop a sound knowledge of portfolio subject matters quickly
Estimated Salary: AU$120,000 - AU$150,000 per annum
