Our TeamThe Department's Legal, Legislation Liaison, and Privacy Division provides high-quality, practical, technically excellent, and timely legal advice, support, and services for the Department and Ministers' offices. Our team is dynamic, collaborative, and supportive, working on diverse subject matter and intellectually stimulating projects.
OpportunitiesWe are growing our public law advisory service to support the Department's legislative program and advise on policies and programs, regulatory, and administrative law. We are seeking talented lawyers with sound technical legal skills, excellent written and interpersonal skills, and an interest in developing robust legislation.
Key Responsibilities- Providing legal advice and support on legislation design and development
- Drafting simple non-tied instruments
- Engaging directly with clients to identify legal issues and provide solutions-focused advice
- Advising on a range of public law matters, including statutory interpretation and administrative law
- Assisting in the management of civil claims and dispute resolution, including merits and judicial reviews
- Assisting with the procurement and engagement of external legal providers and engaging directly with those providers
- Participating in business improvement activities in the Division
We are looking for candidates who support strategic direction, achieve results, support productive working relationships, display personal drive and integrity, and communicate with influence. Additionally, we require a tertiary degree in Law from an Australian tertiary institution (or comparable overseas qualification), admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court or of the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory, or meeting the necessary requirements to be admitted prior to an offer of employment, and a Practising Certificate.
