Job Description:
A STEM career starter role is available in the Defence organization. This opportunity allows students to apply their academic knowledge and research skills in a real-world setting.

The role involves working across Defence to provide scientific advice and/or develop technologies relevant to university studies. As a STEM Cadet, you will be part of a team that provides scientific and technical support to current Defence operations and military capability platforms.

You will also have opportunities to explore future technologies for Defence and national security applications, ensuring Australia is a smart buyer and user of Defence equipment. Additionally, you will develop new Defence and national security capabilities, which may include intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance, communication, weapon platform, cyber security, ballistic, aircraft guidance, war fighter, mechatronic technologies.

You will work collaboratively with government agencies to strengthen national security and assist industry to better support Defence capability needs.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
To be eligible for this role, you must be an Australian undergraduate university student studying full-time at an Australian university, and currently enrolled in a relevant STEM degree, which may include Honours / Masters. You must have successfully completed at least 12 months' full-time tertiary study of a relevant STEM degree before starting the Cadetship. You must complete your tertiary studies (including Honours / Masters) between the end of Semester 2, 2027, and the end of Semester 2, 2028. You must have 12 months full-time tertiary study remaining at the time of the cadetship program commencement.

Benefits:
This role offers competitive salary and benefits, including ongoing APS employment with the Department of Defence, a minimum annual salary of $39,251.52 plus 15.4% superannuation, increasing to $41,397.84 per annum from March 2026 in accordance with the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement – 2024. You will also receive flexible work arrangements, immersive learning opportunities, and relocation assistance if required.
