Position Overview:

In collaboration with our State and Discipline Leaders, you will assume a pivotal and influential leadership position on national initiatives within the Rail Power Systems sector. Your role will involve imparting knowledge, mentoring, and providing technical direction to emerging Engineers. This position is designed to foster the internal growth of the team while ensuring the delivery and quality assurance of significant national projects. You will receive support and training to further enhance your skills and career trajectory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drafting and evaluating intricate reports, proposals, and presentations for clients in the following domains:
    • Design of AC and DC traction substation systems, including the creation of single line diagrams, layouts, circuit diagrams, earthing and bonding schematics, and coordination with communication, civil, structural, and mechanical design disciplines
    • Conducting AC and DC traction power system studies, including equipment sizing, fault calculations, and insulation coordination studies
    • Coordinating the traction power system with overhead wiring and signaling system design
    • Designing lightning protection systems
    • Analyzing and designing earthing systems, including pipeline LFI studies
    • Assessing and designing earthing, bonding, and electrolysis
    • Analyzing, setting, specifying, and designing AC and DC traction protection systems
  • Overseeing the delivery of specialized project components, advising on the most effective team structure to achieve objectives.
  • Conducting technical reviews and quality assurance activities for projects, documentation, processes, and practices.
  • Utilizing technical expertise to identify and seize new client opportunities and to provide technical input during the bidding process.
  • Leading the technical development of team members, providing coaching and mentoring on technical matters.
  • Offering technical expertise and guidance to clients and stakeholders, assisting them in technical decision-making, and providing alternative options/solutions in response to changes in project parameters.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 15+ years of experience as a power systems engineer, with a minimum of 5 years of recent experience in traction power system design or a related field;
  • A tertiary qualification in electrical/power engineering, preferably with chartered engineering and RPEQ status;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency in MS Office;
  • Highly regarded skills such as:
    • Experience in a design consultancy role
    • Proven ability to lead design teams and deliver traction design packages
    • Experience with traction power system modeling software tools.
    • Capability to develop complex earthing and induction models using CDEGS earthing system software
    • Ability to create traction power system models in ETAP or equivalent software tools.
    • Proficiency in developing transient studies in ATP/PSCAD/EMTP
    • Experience in developing EMC management plans and overseeing the EMC management procedure.
    • Expertise in formulating maintenance strategies, commissioning plans, and documentation
