Environmental Conservation Role in New Zealand
">The Kauri Coast Sanctuary is a unique opportunity for individuals to contribute to the preservation of New Zealand's natural beauty. Located on Tutamoe Peak, this cloud-forest is home to the endangered kiwi bird and the rare giant kauri snail.
">As a conservation volunteer, you will work alongside locals to restore the forest to its former glory. This involves a range of tasks including:
">- Cut and mark trails
- Install, refill, and monitor bait stations
- Monitor kiwi, kokako, and rodents
- Monitor bats, lizards, and freshwater fish
- Enter data
- Weed and plant the herb garden
- Build and landscape
- Chop wood
- Other related conservation activities
A typical day at the sanctuary consists of:
">Daily Schedule:
">8 am – 9 am: Breakfast
">9 am – 9:30 am: Clean-up
">10 am – 12 pm: Morning work activities
">12 pm – 1 pm: Lunch
">1 pm – 4 pm: Afternoon work activities
">4 pm – 6 pm: Free time / leisure
">6 pm – 8 pm: Dinner
">8 pm – 10 pm: Leisure activities (sunset watching, etc.)
">Some Mondays are free days to relax or visit the town, while volunteers may explore sights on the Kauri Coast and join a night safari to look for kiwis in the forest once a week.
">Adaptability Required:
">Weather conditions can affect daily activities, so volunteers must be adaptable and flexible.
