About the Role

Zoos SA, a not-for-profit conservation charity, is seeking an experienced Horticultural Specialist to join its team at Monarto Safari Park, a 1,500-hectare open range zoo.

In this newly created role, you will be responsible for collecting browse on and off-site for the expanding animal collection. As a permanent part-time employee, you will work 20 hours a week, three weekdays, under the supervision of the Horticulture team.

The successful candidate will be guided by Zoos SA's values and work collaboratively with the browse team to achieve the goals set out in the Strategic and Business Plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and collect tree browse from specific plant species, adhering to dietary needs of animals in wildlife conservation or zoo environments.
  • Ensure sustainable harvesting practices, preventing harm to trees and maintaining ecosystem health.
  • Monitor and document browse quality, ensuring it meets nutritional and safety standards for animals.
  • Maintain a record of browse collection, tracking resource usage and availability.
  • Collaborate with horticultural and animal care teams to ensure the right species are collected and meet dietary needs.
  • Follow health and safety protocols, including the use of proper equipment and adherence to safety guidelines in potentially hazardous environments.

About You:

  • Hold or be working towards a Certificate II in Horticulture or Conservation Ecosystem Management.
  • Proven experience in plant species identification.
  • Hold a driver's license and have manual experience.
  • Have an awareness and ability to apply horticulture techniques and practices.
  • Hold a chainsaw license.
  • Working at heights qualification is desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Workplace Health & Safety principles and processes.
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills with peers, staff, volunteers, and the public.
