About the Role

Xero is a leading cloud-based accounting platform that empowers small businesses and their advisors to thrive. As a Principal Engineer in our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team, you will be a key figure in driving reliability and excellence across our platform.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of our SRE strategy and vision, ensuring our products are observable, stable, and performant.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with cross-functional teams, influencing reliability outcomes and driving business growth.
  • Engage in productive challenge, manage different viewpoints, and move critical company priorities forward through curiosity and thoughtful questioning.
  • Work closely with leaders and engineers to drive technical and engineering strategy, while remaining connected to day-to-day engineering challenges.
  • Lift team and individual performance through coaching, mentoring, goal clarity, feedback, and removing barriers.
  • Develop a team culture of ownership through role modeling, empowerment, continuous improvement, experimentation, and feedback.
  • Analyse complex challenges, facilitate collaborative problem-solving, and navigate obstacles efficiently.
  • Translate strategy and organisational needs into a technical vision and roadmap, driving implementation and growth.
  • Provide thought leadership and guidance on security, scalability, performance, monitoring, analytics, documentation, and quality.
About the Team

Our SRE team is a global force, driving reliability and excellence across Xero. We combine software and systems engineering to enable engineers to build and support products that are observable, stable, and performant. We strive to maximise the impact of post-incident learning, improve the reliability and robustness of the Xero platform, and provide enablement and training across observability, reliability engineering, incident management, and service ownership.

What You'll Bring
  • Strong strategic delivery experience in software engineering or platform engineering.
  • Experience working in environments with advanced security and networks.
  • Advanced experience in logging, monitoring, and observability of distributed systems, including troubleshooting and service level objectives.
  • Leading incident management and response, including complex and high-severity incidents.
  • Strong hands-on experience in DevOps, continuous delivery, CI/CD, automated quality, and safe deploy and release at scale.
  • Experience with SaaS developer tooling commonly used for observability and incident management.
