Coal Mining Operations Leader

We are seeking a Coal Mining Operations Leader to join our open-cut mine based at Coppabella Moorvale Mine Complex (CMJV).

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the development, execution, and tracking of the annual Mining Business Plan, driving continuous improvement and embedding best practice operational standards.

  • Key Responsibilities :
  • Champion a proactive safety culture by ensuring compliance with the site's Safety and Health Management Plan, leading safety initiatives, and fostering open communication across all teams.
  • Provide strategic oversight of open cut operations, including short, medium, and long-term mine planning, with a focus on optimisation, cost efficiency, and sustainable production outcomes.
  • Oversee the integration and scheduling of people and equipment to align with mine planning objectives, ensuring efficient and reliable delivery of operational targets.
  • Identify operational risks and cost variances early, escalate critical issues with solutions, and implement strategies to meet or exceed physical and financial performance targets.
  • Manage departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with unit cost objectives and effective utilisation of site assets to meet production and maintenance goals.
  • Lead contractor performance within the Mining department, ensuring accountability, safety, and alignment with operational objectives.

About You :

As an operationally focused leader with a strong background in open cut coal mining, you have developed a reputation for delivering results through high performing teams and driving continuous improvement on site. With a wealth of experience in open cut coal mining operations, you bring a blend of operational and technical services expertise, allowing you to understand the full mining value chain and make confident decisions. You have a sharp eye for cost control, scheduling, and execution but just as importantly, you know how to lead people and build a positive, safety-first culture.

Key Attributes We Are Looking For :

  • Proven leadership in open cut operations, ideally with experience in production and sound understanding of technical services.
  • Strong commercial acumen with skills in cost management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Confident communicator with experience engaging senior leadership, regulators, and cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in integrated management systems and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with mining engineering packages will be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of coal mining legislation and risk management principles.
  • Ability to obtain or work towards a Surface Mine Managers qualification in line with statutory requirements.
  • Qualifications in ICAM and Risk Assessment Facilitation are desirable.
  • Statutory qualifications such as SSE or OCE are highly regarded but not mandatory, we will support you in obtaining them.
  • Tertiary qualifications in mining are preferred but not mandatory.
