The Aboriginal Court Assessment & Prosecutions Officer plays a pivotal role in supporting the operation of the Court Assessment and Prosecutions Service (CAPS), providing high-quality evidence-based advice to the Koori Court division of the Magistrates' and County Courts. This specialist function is crucial in assisting the sentencing process and promoting justice within the community.
As an Aboriginal CAPS Officer, you will be required to work within mainstream court divisions of the Magistrates' and County Courts when the Koori Court division is not sitting. Additionally, you may provide support to Aboriginal participants involved in the Melbourne Drug Court, including suitability assessments for Drug and Alcohol Treatment Orders (DATO) and case management support to program participants.
This role requires strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal community. You will need to demonstrate knowledge of best approaches to support individuals in contact with the criminal justice system, as well as experience or knowledge of court processes, prosecutions, or related areas.
Required Skills and Qualifications:- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting on it.
- Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal community.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake assessments with complex individuals.
- Understanding of best approaches to support the needs of people who are in contact with the criminal justice systems.
- Understanding of case management.
This position offers a competitive salary plus employee benefits. The role provides an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the community and work towards reducing the overrepresentation of Aboriginal people within the Criminal Justice System.
Others:The Department of Justice and Community Safety is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. We seek to prevent harm of any kind impacting children and young people and have zero tolerance for racism, child abuse and inequality. Children and young people's rights, relationships, identity, and culture must be recognised and respected, their voices heard, and their concerns acted upon.
