We are inviting applications for PhD scholarships to pursue research in statistical machine learning with a focus on metocean and ocean engineering applications.
The successful candidate will be part of the Australian Research Council's Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Transforming Energy Infrastructure through Digital Engineering, situated in the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre at the University of Western Australia.
- Sequential decision making and optimal design techniques will be used to augment targeted and efficient data acquisition;
- Data-driven spatio-temporal inference and prediction of complex ocean dynamic processes will be developed;
- Statistical analyses, emulation, and uncertainty quantification of physical models will be performed.
A generous scholarship will be awarded to fund the student's studies for three years full-time. An additional top-up scholarship may be available for outstanding candidates. Tuition fees for international students (for up to four years) will be waived.
Candidates should have an interest in developing statistical learning/machine learning methodology and computation, excellent mathematical and programming skills, and experience in using them to model and predict environmental or engineering phenomena.
Key Requirements- Strong background in statistical machine learning and its applications;
- Excellent programming skills in languages such as Python or R;
- Familiarity with statistical software packages and libraries.
The successful candidate will receive a generous scholarship package including:
- Full tuition fees for up to four years;
- A stipend to cover living expenses during the candidature period;
- An additional top-up scholarship for outstanding candidates.
Applications are invited from domestic and international students who are able to commence their PhD studies in the near future. Interested candidates should submit their application materials including a research proposal, academic transcripts, and contact information for two referees.
