Key Roles for a Build Engineer

A key role of the Build Engineer involves collaborating with vehicle analysts and design teams to develop innovative solutions for flight and manufacturing hardware.

  • Responsibilities include owning the development of flight hardware and build processes, including welding, large part movement, and structures integration for a powerful rocket.
  • The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless transition of parts and assemblies from development to high-rate production.
  • Key performance indicators include executing design for manufacturability changes to enhance production efficiency, creating original CAD models and prints for flight and/or tooling components, and managing build schedules and resolving manufacturing discrepancies while interfacing with the quality team.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline is required. A minimum of 1 year of engineering experience in manufacturing or production, internship, and school projects are also essential.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • A master's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace, materials, or industrial engineering can be beneficial. Involvement in a professional engineering society or collegiate design project is also valuable.
  • The ideal candidate should have experience with the build, assembly, or integration of large mechanical assemblies. Knowledge of metallic manufacturing techniques, processes, and equipment related to welding, metal forming, fastening, drilling, bonding, and automation is necessary.
  • Mechanical component and/or tooling design and analysis experience using 3D CAD software, along with experience transitioning complex products from R&D to high-volume manufacturing in a fast-paced environment, will be highly valued.
