Key Position: District Veterinary Officer

The Animal Health and Welfare Unit is seeking a highly skilled and experienced District Veterinary Officer to lead disease surveillance, livestock legislation enforcement, emergency preparedness and response initiatives, traceability and product integrity projects.

  • Main Responsibilities:
  • Supervise staff in their district, ensuring the quality assurance of the Animal Health and Welfare program by providing expert guidance on animal health and welfare matters.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into disease outbreaks and animal welfare concerns, utilizing clinical expertise to inform strategic decisions that drive better veterinary outcomes.
  • Promote effective liaison with government departments, farmers, livestock agents, and industry stakeholders to ensure collaboration and support for major animal health projects.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to minimize chemical residue minimization programs and enhance overall animal health and welfare standards.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, enabling effective liaison with diverse stakeholders.
  • In-depth understanding of Victorian livestock industries, including disease control, emergency management, and chemical residue minimisation programs.
  • Extensive experience in using firearms and captive bolt guns in the humane destruction of livestock and working in abattoir and knackery environments.
  • Tertiary degree in Veterinary Science registrable with the relevant professional bodies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in handling farm livestock, including sheep, cattle, pigs, and horses, as well as knowledge of their husbandry practices.
  • Proven leadership and conflict management skills, including high levels of personal resilience.
