Aboriginal Community Midwifery Specialist
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Aboriginal Community Midwifery Specialist to enhance our quality health services for Aboriginal communities in far western New South Wales. This full-time position reports to the Manager of Healthy Start and encompasses a range of essential duties aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
· Oversee and facilitate a diverse array of midwifery treatments and care initiatives, employing a patient-centered methodology within a general practice environment.
· Collaborate within the Child and Family Program to deliver safe and effective community midwifery services, ensuring seamless care continuity for mothers and children throughout pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood.
· Provide mentorship and guidance to Aboriginal Health Practitioners and trainees in both ante-natal and post-natal care, promoting their active involvement.
· Execute clinical midwifery responsibilities as outlined in maternity care plans, based on the best available evidence, including antenatal and post-natal evaluations, infant assessments, immunizations, and collection of pathology samples.
· Implement the AMIHS Program Activities in partnership with maternity, medical, obstetric, and pediatric teams to offer a variety of community-based services for Aboriginal women and their infants. These services include:
o A culturally sensitive continuity of care model throughout the antenatal and postnatal phases for up to 6-8 weeks;
o Identification and referral of complex pregnancies to specialists;
o Outreach and home visiting services;
· Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with the midwifery team at Broken Hill Health Service to ensure holistic, culturally appropriate care during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
· Provide emotional and social support to women, particularly those with heightened needs.
To Be Successful:
· Hold current unconditional registration with AHPRA as a registered Midwife.
· Possess a minimum of 3 years of midwifery experience, ideally in a community-focused role.
· Have or be able to obtain, within 3 months of starting, authorization as an immunization provider in New South Wales.
· Demonstrate a strong understanding of and commitment to primary health care principles as they relate to maternal and infant health for Aboriginal families.
· Exhibit the ability to work collaboratively with Aboriginal staff and communities, fostering mutual respect.
· Effectively engage with women, parents, caregivers, families, and other service providers in a community setting, including those who may be challenging to connect with.
· Showcase strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise and network across various health services and general practitioners.
· Understand the social determinants impacting health issues within Aboriginal populations.
· Work effectively in a community-based environment and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Compensation and Benefits:
· Competitive salary up to $113,000 gross per annum, plus superannuation, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
