About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior FX Technical Director to join our team at Framestore. As a key member of our visual effects department, you will be responsible for creating stunning CG renditions of naturalistic physical or magical phenomena.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement particle, rigid-body, fluid, cloth, fur, and hair simulations or animations
  • Apply lighting and shaders to produce the final rendered image or pass the simulation on to a Lighting Technical Director
  • Utilize commercial and proprietary FX tools, including Maya and Houdini
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure shots are delivered to the highest possible standard
  • Work with the team to determine design solutions needed to create the effects
  • Design and create images, elements, effects, pipelines, tools, and techniques
  • Develop solutions involving a more procedural approach to create the required effects
  • Produce review-able composites of all FX elements for a shot, and sometimes final renders
Requirements
  • Excellent knowledge of Maya and Houdini (or experience in other simulation software)
  • Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to FX simulation and procedural animation
  • Previous experience producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam, and explosions, as well as simulation techniques for rigid-bodies, cloth, and hair
  • Good understanding of animation and an eye for motion
  • Good understanding of the entire visual effects process
  • Familiarity with pipeline issues, especially working between multiple packages
  • Working knowledge of at least one compositing application (e.g. Nuke) and a solid understanding of the compositing process
  • Strong Python and/or Vex, Mel scripting skills
Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge in other simulation packages such as Naiad and realflow
  • Experience with Arnold or other render packages
  • Programming skills with C/C++ along with knowledge of the Houdini HDK and/or Maya API
  • Unix shell scripting
