Base Salary RangeA$100,000.00/yr - A$120,000.00/yr
Direct message the job poster from BioScout has developed the world's first automated system for detecting airborne crop disease using daily spore sampling and analysis. Already deployed across Australia, and now rolling out across Europe and Latin America, it's giving farmers an earlier insight into disease presence, helping reduce crop losses, limiting chemical use, and supporting more sustainable farming.
The system combines environmental sampling, microscopy, and data analytics to reveal the invisible. With demand growing, we're scaling up production and developing new sensing technologies that push the boundaries of agricultural monitoring.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing embedded systems that integrate sensors, microcontrollers, actuators, and power systems
- Prototyping and debugging electronics, including hands-on validation and fault analysis
- Designing mechanical components and assemblies for both internal integration and outdoor deployment in harsh farming environments
- Writing firmware in C++ and Python for STM32 and Particle-based platforms
- Improving our testing and verification processes so we can move faster without compromising quality
- Working closely with production and other teams to improve manufacturability, reliability, and test coverage
- Collaborating in a small, fast-paced mechatronics team as part of a larger engineering group consisting of data, machine learning and software engineers, and our science team.
This is a multidisciplinary role. Some days may be focused on writing code, whilst others may involve designing mechanical parts, resolving supply chain issues, or debugging complex electronics issues. We don't expect you to know everything, but we do expect you to ask good questions, think critically, and learn quickly.
We're looking for someone who has
- 4+ years of experience in an electronics or mechatronics role
- Comfortable working with firmware in C++/Python for embedded systems
- Experience testing electronics using lab equipment, debugging failures, and identifying root causes to guide fixes or design changes
- Experience using mechanical CAD (we use Fusion 360) to design parts that are manufacturable and fit for purpose
- Able to explore problems independently, test ideas, and learn by doing
- Thinks from first principles and isn't afraid to challenge assumptions or rethink a solution
- Cares about the quality of their work and follows things through to completion
Bonus Points
Not essential, but highly regarded:
- Experience with systems engineering processes
- Experience with verification and validation of physical systems
- Familiarity with designing for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA)
- Experience developing ruggedised or environment-exposed hardware
- Experience working in agriculture or AgTech
- Experience with CE/FCC regulatory processes
What We Offer
- Full-time salary + Super + Equity Options
- Work on a mission-driven product already in use across farms in Australia and overseas, helping make agriculture more sustainable and efficient
- We're building a supportive, cross-functional environment where engineers work closely with sales and deployment teams, are trusted with real responsibility, and have room to grow.
- Reasonable flexibility with hours, with most of the team based on-site in our Marrickville office and workshop
- Regular team events and a well-equipped space for development and testing
