The Salvation Army Youth Services deliver a comprehensive range of programs that engage with young individuals across Australia. Our services facilitate intentional pathways for youth to explore opportunities, build support networks, and access, participate in, and contribute to their communities. Youth services encompass a diverse array of programs, including housing and homelessness support, driver training, education, employment, training, AOD support, social and community activities, specialized therapeutic responses, and youth justice initiatives.

About the role

We are looking for a values-driven Youth Support Worker who will provide both practical and emotional assistance to young individuals facing homelessness and crisis situations. This role involves connecting clients with suitable community service providers and ensuring a safe, secure, and clean environment for clients in a 24-hour accommodation setting. Collaboration with the broader team is essential to achieve optimal outcomes for young people.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing effective and supportive relationships with clients, ensuring each individual is treated with respect, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Fostering a cooperative relationship with all team members to ensure an effective team approach to program implementation and service delivery.
  • Planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating appropriate life skills and other relevant programs for clients.
  • Providing information and referral services to non-governmental and statutory organizations, community groups, and individuals as needed.
  • Assisting clients in developing or re-establishing suitable family and social networks.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A qualification in social work, youth work, community work, or a related field.
  • A valid Driver's License.
  • A Working with Children Card.
  • A current first aid certification or the ability to obtain one promptly.
  • Experience working with young individuals who are homeless and/or in crisis within a Case Management Framework.
  • Experience engaging with young people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • It is desirable for applicants to have an understanding of the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, mental health issues, and other disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage unpredictable situations and behaviors, including violence and challenges associated with homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health conditions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including participation in data collection and report writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • The ability to employ active listening skills, assess crisis situations, and apply crisis intervention principles, including conflict resolution within the community.

This is a permanent, part-time position (11 hours per week). Salary and conditions are aligned with the Social, Community, Home Care, and Disability CRISIS Level 1 Award.
