Job Title: Assistant Director

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is seeking an experienced professional to join our team as an Assistant Director. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging environment where you will have the chance to drive key initiatives and business reform.

This role offers the successful applicant the opportunity to work on complex issues and develop solutions that will shape the future of the department. As an Assistant Director, you will be responsible for leading a geographically dispersed team and working closely with internal and external stakeholders to achieve business objectives.

About the Role:

  • Develop and implement legal and operational policy, procedures and templates
  • Prepare and review draft reports, decision briefs, Ministerial correspondence and analytical reports
  • Undertake research and critical analysis and write reports
  • Contribute to legislative change through the development of explanatory material and consequential implementation activities
  • Make statutory decisions under the Regulatory Powers (Standard Provisions) Act 2014
  • Build regulatory capability and promote regulatory uplift within the department
  • Lead a geographically dispersed team
  • Communicate and liaise with internal and external stakeholders effectively
  • Undertake strategic planning to meet business objectives and deliver departmental outcomes

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to perform research and analysis that inform decision-making on complex or escalated issues and longer-term planning
  • Able to educate and engage with stakeholders to promote compliance with legislation and support transparent regulation
  • Sound working knowledge of relevant legislation and policy frameworks
  • Experience providing advice on issues and working with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the resolution of complex policy or regulatory matters
  • A clear understanding of compliance and risk management principles
  • Experience in implementing change and managing ambiguity in the workplace
  • Experience in leading, managing and supporting staff to work collaboratively in a challenging, complex and fast-paced operational environment
  • High level writing skills with demonstrated experience delivering a range of written products
