Floral Manager - A Leading Horticultural Role


Job Description

The Floral Manager will play a pivotal role in the curation, development, and management of public gardens. This position combines horticulture, programming, interpretation, and management, offering a unique opportunity for growth and learning.

This exciting role will contribute to the delivery of exceptional gardening programs, interpretative materials, and activities that inspire and engage visitors. As a key member of the team, you will work closely with stakeholders to develop and maintain high standards of horticulture, display, and visitor experience.

In this dynamic role, you will be responsible for undertaking manual tasks in an outdoor environment across all seasons, maintaining and operating plant and equipment, and ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting general horticultural maintenance, including planting, pruning, mulching, weeding, hedging, mowing, soil amelioration, and irrigation.
  • Creating and following a program for daily works.
  • Undertaking tree maintenance.
  • Maintaining and operating plant and other equipment in a clean, safe, and effective working condition.
  • Facilitating a lead role in on-ground programming, monitoring, operating, and maintenance of the irrigation system as part of a broader team dedicated to best practice water management.
  • Identifying and controlling diseases and pests using Integrated Pest Management principles.

Additional responsibilities may include utilising consultants and contractors to support and deliver required gardening works, contributing to the development and delivery of Gardening programs, and engaging respectfully with diverse stakeholders.


Required Skills and Qualifications

To succeed in this challenging role, applicants should have:

  • Demonstrated experience in horticulture and gardening, particularly in curating and managing public spaces.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of plants, with a focus on high-value amenity horticulture.
  • Technical skills in operating, managing, and troubleshooting a large-scale automated irrigation system.
  • Ability to supervise contractors and consultants.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with diverse stakeholders.
  • Physical fitness and capacity to undertake manual tasks in an outdoor environment across all seasons.

A formal qualification in horticulture (minimum Diploma of Horticulture) or a related discipline is highly desirable.


Desired Experience/Qualifications

Prior experience working in collaboration with First Peoples communities and organisations would be highly valued.

Formal qualifications in environmental science or a related field are also considered advantageous.
