Job Overview

There is a growing need for support services to assist Defence families and students who are transitioning into new schools or navigating periods of parental absence. This unique role plays a vital part in ensuring the wellbeing and academic success of these students.

About the Role

This blended position combines two critical components: the Defence School Mentor (DSM) and the Student Wellbeing Officer (SWO). The DSM component focuses on providing tailored support to Australian Defence Force (ADF) students and their families, facilitating a smooth transition into the school community and ongoing support during periods of parental absence. Meanwhile, the SWO component delivers wellbeing support to the wider student population, working collaboratively with the Wellbeing and Sub-School Teams to promote positive mental health, attendance, engagement, and social-emotional learning.

Main Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing regular wellbeing check-ins and social/emotional support to Defence students. They will also support students during periods of parental absence, develop and implement individualised wellbeing support plans, and work towards enhancing student engagement and attendance strategies. Additionally, they will deliver evidence-based group programs, mental health workshops, and other interventions as needed.

Key Skills and Qualifications

To succeed in this challenging yet rewarding role, you will require exceptional interpersonal skills, the ability to build trust with students and their families, and a strong commitment to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. A relevant degree in a field such as education, psychology, or social work, along with experience working in a similar capacity, would be highly desirable.
