Practice Overview: This Veterinary Teaching Hospital operates under the auspices of a local University, providing an independent environment for clinical training to final-year veterinary students. The facility encompasses five key disciplines: General Practice, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Anaesthesia (Referral Services), with a dedicated team of approximately 85-90 professionals.
Role Overview: The Senior Clinician will deliver exceptional veterinary emergency and critical care services for small animals. Responsibilities include diagnosing and managing a range of diseases, traumatic injuries, and critical health conditions, as well as performing and overseeing medical and surgical interventions. A significant focus will be on educating students, nursing staff, and less experienced veterinarians.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in a flexible role that evolves as the clinician gains further expertise, with regular evaluations and discussions.
- Adhere to the hospital's protocols while contributing to the ongoing enhancement of practices that align with the institution's mission and values.
- Foster a collaborative, supportive, and enriching learning atmosphere.
- Clinical Veterinary Duties: Including management responsibilities.
- Clinical Teaching: Provide clinical education, mentorship, support, evaluation, and assessment of veterinary students through practical sessions, group tutoring, and individualized instruction, including student remediation as necessary.
Work Schedule: 38-hour work week on a monthly roster, typically consisting of three long shifts per week, with alternating weekends off, incorporating a mix of day, night, and swing shifts.
Qualifications and Licenses:
- Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or an equivalent degree eligible for registration.
- Current registration with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland.
- Membership in the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (MANZCVS) in Emergency and Critical Care.
- Radiological License with Queensland Health.
- QFever Immunization.
- Senior First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- CPR training or readiness to acquire.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Extensive experience in emergency and critical care veterinary practice, aligned with the JCU Vet ECC Veterinarian Competency List.
- Significant exposure to acute trauma, shock, respiratory distress, cardiac issues, neurological conditions, and other critical illnesses requiring immediate care.
- Advanced proficiency in surgical and anaesthesia best practices.
- Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- Well-honed organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Experience in low-stress animal handling techniques.
- Proficient in computer and administrative tasks.
- A genuine interest in and aptitude for teaching emergency and critical care.
- Experience in veterinary education within a clinical service context.

Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience. An experienced ECC Clinician (6-10 years in dedicated ECC practice, capable of working independently in emergencies, with ECC membership) can anticipate a salary range of $150,000 – $170,000.
- The annual salary encompasses irregular hours and includes up to 8 reasonable additional hours per fortnight. Any hours beyond this will be compensated at the hourly equivalent rate.
- 11% superannuation.
- $2500 for continuing professional development annually.
- 5 weeks of annual leave.
- 1 week of paid study leave annually.
